Immersive by Design: Creating Over 5,000 Dream Theaters with Jay Miller of Acoustic Innovations
March 19, 2026
Behind every world-class home cinema lies a designer who can turn bare walls into a transportive escape. For Jay Miller, founder of Acoustic Innovations, that journey began with a personal frustration: poor acoustics in his own Florida family room. “We moved from a cozy Massachusetts basement theater into a big, open plan home with tile, glass, and high ceilings. Suddenly, everything sounded broken,” he recalls. Unable to find solutions, Miller took matters into his own hands, pioneering what would become one of the most respected names in home theater acoustics and design in 1992.

His first big breakthrough came in 1994 at the Stereophile show in Miami, where Acoustic Innovations unveiled a deco-themed demo theater with automated curtains and Lutron lighting. “Someone asked, ‘Can you do this in my home?’ and I said yes, even though I still had to figure it out!” Miller laughs. That “yes” kicked off a career that has now spanned more than 5,000 dedicated home cinemas worldwide.
Balancing Science and Style
At the heart of Acoustic Innovations is a philosophy of innovatively acoustic design. “We always start by looking at the room’s bones to assess its characteristics. We don’t want sound intruding on the Theater experience. Optimal projects involve early engagement, often before walls are framed. We help specify details for rigid walls, higher STCs, and proper floor isolation. But even if we come in later, we adapt. Collaboration is the key.”
Once the acoustical groundwork is laid, the next step is listening to the client’s aesthetic vision, be it modern minimalism or a classic movie palace. “We’re orchestrating all the pieces: the homeowner’s desires, the integrator’s equipment choices, the builder’s timeline, the electrician’s layouts. It’s about making sure the technical and creative visions come together seamlessly.”
Once sound containment has been achieved, and a clear aesthetic selected, it’s time to optimize the internal room acoustic design. “It’s about precision and placing the right treatment in the right place. Sound that bounces around uncontrollably, or overly dead spaces, are poor acoustic design.”
Partnerships Built on Trust
Miller emphasizes that Acoustic Innovations works hand-in-hand with integrators, treating their project vision as the guiding blueprint. “Integrators are our primary clients, and we take our responsibility to them and their client very seriously. When they specify JBL Synthesis, it’s our job to ensure that the gear they’ve chosen performs flawlessly in the space,” he says.
Why JBL Synthesis?
Miller’s relationship with JBL Synthesis dates back nearly 30 years to CES 1995, where he fabricated and installed a 30-seat theater demo with many of the legacy names in the industry. “It was incredible. Four SSW1 subwoofers could control massive bass while keeping it tight. That was my first taste of what JBL Synthesis could really do.”
Today, JBL Synthesis remains a trusted partner because it offers a complete ecosystem: amplifiers, speakers, room measurement tools, cabling, and software that integrate seamlessly. “When a system is linear from top to bottom, it makes the whole process easier,” Miller says. “Plus, JBL Synthesis provides incredible support, technical layouts, room calibration, and post-project assistance. They’re as invested in the outcome as we are.”
Memorable Cinemas Around the World
Among the thousands of theaters Miller has designed, a few stand out. One in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, stretched 60 feet long by 40 feet wide, with 25-foot ceilings and a 30-foot screen. JBL Everest speakers anchored the room, powered by Mark Levinson amps. “We built floating floors, stepped ceilings, and extreme acoustic treatments. Sitting in that room was like being inside a giant pair of headphones,” he recalls.
More recently, Miller delivered a huge U.S.-based home cinema using the JBL Synthesis SDP-75 processor, full Atmos surrounds, and eight subwoofers. That project was directly inspired by the Saudi theater, a testament to how iconic HARMAN Luxury Audio experiences can ripple across the globe.

What’s Next in Luxury Cinema
Miller sees a growing consumer appetite for high-performance home cinemas. “We’re seeing more demand for large-format rooms and fully immersive audio, as clients shift their movie watching experiences into their homes,” he says. “Clients are expecting commercial-level experiences and JBL Synthesis delivers exactly that.”
“With JBL Synthesis, we know the room will sound extraordinary. It gives our integrator partners confidence, it gives our clients joy, and it makes our job as designers infinitely easier,” Miller concludes.
